New 24/7 Border Crossing for Passenger Cars Opens Between Ukraine and Romania in Zakarpattia

Launch of a New International Border Point

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Ukraine and Romania have inaugurated a new international checkpoint named 'Bila Tserkva – Sighetu Marmației' in the Zakarpattia region, designated for passenger vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons. This crossing operates around the clock and can accommodate up to 700 cars daily. The establishment of this point was formalized by the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers’ resolution No. 1130 dated September 17.

This new border crossing complements the existing 'Solotvyno – Sighetu Marmației' checkpoint, which will also maintain 24/7 operations. Once the bridge over the Tisza River is completed and the border facilities are fully equipped, the new crossing will expand its capacity to handle passenger buses and freight trucks.

Security Challenges Amid Ongoing Conflict

Despite the positive development, Ukrainian border areas continue to face significant threats due to Russian military actions. Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, reported that Russian forces have been conducting drone strikes targeting Ukrainian border crossings and nearby civilian infrastructure. Notably, on September 9, Russian troops attacked the international vehicle crossing 'Starokozache' located in Odesa region near the Moldovan border.

The assault resulted in fires, the deaths of two civilians, and injuries to several others.

The opening of the 'Bila Tserkva – Sighetu Marmației' checkpoint marks a crucial step in enhancing border infrastructure. However, ongoing military threats pose serious challenges to regional security.

This new crossing not only strengthens transport links between Ukraine and Romania but also reflects Ukraine’s commitment to bolstering its border capabilities amid conflict. The persistent threat from Russian military operations highlights the fragile security environment, demanding heightened vigilance and support from governmental authorities and international allies. While this development promises to enhance economic ties, ensuring safety remains essential for maintaining stability in the borderlands.
