Ukraine Summons Hungarian Diplomat Over Unauthorized Prisoner Transfer from Russia
Hungarian Diplomat Summoned
According to МЗС: Ukraine has summoned a Hungarian representative following the unauthorized transfer of Ukrainian prisoners of war from Russia to Hungary. On March 5, the acting chargé d'affaires of the Hungarian embassy in Ukraine was called to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This action was a direct response to Hungary repatriating several Ukrainian POWs from Russian captivity without prior notification or coordination with Kyiv. This incident highlights the sensitive and complex diplomatic protocols surrounding prisoner exchanges during wartime.
Protecting the Rights of Service Members
Ukrainian officials emphasized the critical importance of upholding the rights of its captured military personnel. Having already secured the return of 200 service members through official exchanges, Ukraine has demanded that Hungary ensure the recently transferred soldiers have immediate access to Ukrainian consular officials. Furthermore, Kyiv expects Budapest to provide a swift response and official confirmation that these individuals have been granted full freedom to choose their place of residence and future plans.
These steps demonstrate Ukraine's commitment to safeguarding its citizens caught in difficult circumstances and underscore the necessity of international coordination on prisoner of war matters. The diplomatic summons serves as a signal to other nations about the imperative of adhering to international humanitarian law and protecting POW rights within the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
