Ukraine Marks First-Ever Day of Unmanned Systems Forces
Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces Day
According to Главком: On June 11, 2026, Ukraine celebrates the inaugural Day of the Unmanned Systems Forces. This holiday was established by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decree No. 485/2026, with its origin tied to the first successful combat mission of an FPV drone on June 10, 2022. During that mission, fighters from the SIGNUM battalion-operating under the call signs Tourist, Shvaiger, and Baghdad-carried out the first battlefield deployment of an unmanned aerial vehicle.
The Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) were officially created in Ukraine on February 6, 2024, when President Zelenskyy signed the relevant decree. The Cabinet of Ministers endorsed the decision on May 7, 2024, and on June 25, 2024, the USF became a separate branch of the military. Colonel Robert Brovdi was appointed as its commander. Since the formation of this unit, the Unmanned Systems Forces have achieved remarkable results. Over the course of one year, the unit destroyed more than 350,000 verified enemy targets, with drone forces accounting for every third target neutralized by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Unmanned Systems Forces Achievements
In the first five months of 2026 alone, USF units struck 174 enemy air defense systems. The total value of destroyed Russian targets is estimated at nearly $40 billion. Although the Unmanned Systems Forces make up just 2% of Ukraine’s military personnel, they are responsible for one-third of all eliminated targets. Notably, drones traveled approximately 1,100 kilometers to strike the corvette Boyky in Kronstadt.
In marking the occasion, President Zelenskyy emphasized: "For the first time in the world, it was in Ukraine that we created such a branch of forces. We are developing the USF to the fullest, and it is Ukrainians who have proven that through technology, creativity, and courage, we can change the course of war."
Yulia Svyrydenko described the Day of the Unmanned Systems Forces as a celebration for those who rewrote the rules of engagement and upended old military doctrines. This observance highlights the critical role of drone technology in modern warfare and its transformative impact on combat operations.
The establishment of this day underscores the importance of innovation in Ukraine’s military strategy, particularly the use of unmanned technologies that have significantly altered the battlefield. It also reflects the country’s commitment to developing new military structures capable of meeting contemporary challenges. The growing prominence of the USF within Ukraine’s armed forces may serve as a model for other nations seeking to modernize their armies and adapt to evolving warfare conditions.
As Ukraine celebrates the inaugural Day of the Unmanned Systems Forces, it is essential to understand the significance of this milestone. The establishment of this unique military branch, as outlined in a recent presidential decree, underscores the growing importance of unmanned technology in modern warfare. The achievements of the USF highlight Ukraine's innovative approach to military strategy and its commitment to leveraging advanced systems in defense operations.
