Four Border Crossings with Moldova Upgraded as Ukraine Completes Modernization Effort
Upgrades at Ukrainian-Moldovan Border Crossings
According to Главком: Ukraine has finished upgrading four border checkpoints along its frontier with Moldova, located in the Odesa region, and has opened a new service area near the Reni–Giurgiulești crossing. This infrastructure overhaul on the Ukrainian-Moldovan corridor is designed to improve travel conditions for both citizens and international businesses. These developments are part of broader efforts to strengthen cross-border connectivity and align with European standards.
In the Odesa region, the renovation of four checkpoints has been completed, including:
- Starokozache–Tudora
- Dolynske–Chișmichioi
A comprehensive infrastructure upgrade was carried out at these locations. New modular structures were installed, fences were replaced, and engineering networks and traffic management systems were updated. The checkpoints were also equipped with backup power sources. At the Lisne–Seiți and Maloyaroslavets 1–Ceadîr-Lunga crossings, the second phase of modernization-launched in 2024 with support from international partners-has been completed. Modern work modules for staff, canopies, outdoor lighting, generators, and emergency vehicle stop systems have been put in place.
Service Zone Near Reni–Giurgiulești Checkpoint
The service area adjacent to the Reni–Giurgiulești border crossing covers 1.7 hectares and was built under the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program as part of the Solidarity Lanes initiative. The service zone's infrastructure includes:
- 46 parking spaces for freight trucks
- 13 spaces for passenger cars
- Two specially designated spots for people with disabilities
The facility also features a modern public restroom, rest shelters, lighting, and water supply and drainage systems.
Oleksii Kuleba stated that 'the state is building a modern border crossing system designed for both citizens and international business.'
This underscores the role of border infrastructure modernization in fostering economic ties and enhancing the travel experience. Engaging international partners and implementing such projects create favorable conditions for movement between Ukraine and Moldova, which is crucial for the development of both nations.
The modernization of border checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Moldovan frontier represents a significant step in Ukraine's integration into European structures and in boosting economic cooperation with neighboring countries. Through these initiatives, Ukraine can not only improve border control efficiency but also establish comfortable crossing conditions that support business growth and tourism in the region.
