The Ukrainian people are definitely tired of the war – they want peace and expect the authorities to engage in negotiations and make concessions to achieve it.

According to a social survey, one third of Ukrainian citizens who have already turned sixteen believe that the Ukrainian authorities must make any concessions just to end the military actions in Eastern Ukraine. More than 30% of Ukrainians are convinced of this, to be exact – 32%.

Another third of the population (29%) insists that negotiations should take place, at least until there are significant positive shifts in the conflict. This part of the respondents is not ready for significant concessions, only minor compromises that do not contradict Ukraine's position would be acceptable.

Speaking of concessions. The most common thesis among the residents of Ukraine (21%) is about providing self-declared republics – Donetsk and Luhansk – special status for a predetermined period of time. During this period, they will be under partial control of Ukraine. Moreover, Ukrainians in the survey mentioned other compromises. For instance, granting the Russian language the status of a second state language, which should be enshrined in the Basic Law of Ukraine – the Constitution (12% of respondents), and refusing to join NATO with a neutral status (11%).

At the same time, according to the survey, just over 20% of Ukrainian citizens believe that no concessions in the conflict are acceptable. Ukrainians need to be mobilized urgently, obtain assistance from Western countries and NATO, and continue fighting for Donbas until the complete liberation of the eastern regions from the aggressor.

Meanwhile, about 18% of respondents found it difficult to express a clear opinion on the situation in Ukraine.

The study was conducted by GfK Ukraine last month (February 2015).

It should be noted that according to another social survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology among residents of different regions of Ukraine, it became known that 44% of Kyiv residents support negotiations between the separatists and the Ukrainian government. The same option was supported by 36% of residents of central Ukraine. Residents of the West and North of Ukraine (42% and 34% respectively) disagree with this point of view - they advocate for military conflict and the destruction of the enemy. The population of the southern (44%) and eastern (54%) regions is confident that the Ukrainian authorities must do everything possible and make any compromises to achieve peace in the conflict zone.
