Rescue Operation for a Ukrainian Hiker in the Maramureș Mountains

According to Главком: On May 23, after a family friend alerted authorities, a search was launched for a 30-year-old Ukrainian citizen who had been missing for over a week in the rugged Maramureș Mountains. The man had gone four days without eating, prompting serious concern among his loved ones. The rescue mission, which lasted two days, involved both border guards and mountain rescue teams from Romania’s Maramureș County.

Search efforts were suspended overnight due to darkness but resumed on May 24 with the help of a helicopter. The crew spotted the man in a remote, hard-to-reach area of the mountain range. Upon evacuation by helicopter, he was transported to the base of the mountains, handed over to an ambulance crew, and taken to the nearest hospital. The rescued individual reported that he had become lost more than a week earlier.

The Dangers of Mountain Hiking

The purpose of the man’s hike remains unknown. It is worth noting that the Maramureș Mountains are among the most challenging ranges in the Carpathians, and mobile phone service is unavailable across most of the area. This incident is not an isolated one:

  • Last August, rescuers searched for a 23-year-old Ukrainian citizen who got lost in the Maramureș region.
  • Previously, in the Romanian Carpathians, rescue teams extracted 28-year-old Vladyslav Duda from a mountain gorge.

The highest peak of the Maramureș Mountains on the Romanian side is Mount Farcău, standing at 1,957 meters.

Search operations in such conditions demand significant effort from rescue services, who often work under challenging circumstances. As similar cases become more frequent, it is crucial for hikers to follow safety guidelines and plan their routes with potential risks in mind.
