Crimea's Supply Lines Severed by Ukrainian Drone Campaign
How Ukrainian Drones Are Targeting Crimea's Supply Routes
According to ХВИЛЯ: Since early April, Ukrainian drones have systematically destroyed supply routes into occupied Crimea. This campaign has knocked out the coastal road along the Sea of Azov, bridges across the Chongar Strait, and disrupted rail links and maritime shipping. The only remaining route is the Kerch Bridge, which handles only a fraction of the usual traffic. The resulting blockade has caused fuel and ammunition shortages in occupied southern Ukraine, complicating the situation for Russian forces.
Crimea in Late June: Escalating Pressure
By late June, multi-kilometer traffic jams formed at exits from Crimea. The main supply artery from Rostov-on-Don to the Black Sea region now stretches about 630 kilometers. On June 11, the 1st Separate Assault Regiment destroyed a large cache of ammunition and fuel destined for positions near Zaporizhzhia, along with nearly 50 loaded vehicles, in a single strike. Attacks on Russian oil refineries have cut processing capacity by roughly a quarter.
On June 21, Sergei Aksyonov, the head of occupied Crimea, halted gasoline sales to civilians-a clear sign of severe supply issues. In May, Ukraine's Defense Ministry announced a 'logistical lockdown,' underscoring the strategic intent. The campaign's primary weapon is cheap, medium-range Ukrainian-made drones capable of hitting targets up to 320 kilometers from the front line. New models include the FP-2 and Behemoth, the latter reaching speeds of 180 km/h and carrying a warhead of about 70 kilograms.
On June 24, strikes hit electrical substations in Simferopol and Sevastopol, blacking out large areas. A state of emergency was declared in Crimea afterward. Military analysts say these actions are isolating Russian forces. Serhiy Kuzan noted,
“By cutting off fuel supplies to the southern front, Ukraine is paralyzing Russian military logistics and isolating troops.”
George Barros added,
“Ukraine is shaping the battlefield”
and pointed out that blocking all escape routes alters the enemy's calculations.
This campaign marks a new phase in the conflict, where drone warfare has become a central strategic element. Disrupting supply lines and enforcing a blockade could significantly undermine Russian forces' capabilities in the region and shift the overall momentum of the fighting. These actions not only limit the enemy's options but also create new conditions for Ukrainian troops, potentially changing the balance of power on the front line.
The ongoing drone campaign has raised significant concerns in the region, prompting President Zelensky to announce a new offensive aimed at amplifying pressure on Russian forces. This strategic move aligns with Ukraine's efforts to disrupt supply lines further and could potentially escalate tensions.
