Ukrainian Drones Ignite Major Fire at LUKOIL Refinery in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod Region
Безпілотники з України спричинили великий спалах на нафтопереробному заводі у Нижньому Новгороді.

Drone Strike Targets LUKOIL Refinery

According to ХВИЛЯ: In the early hours of November 1, Ukrainian attack drones struck the LUKOIL-Nizhny Novgorodnefteorgsintez refinery located in Kstovo, within Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region. This assault triggered a large-scale fire at one of Russia’s largest oil refining facilities, which processes between 15 and 17 million tons of crude oil annually. Governor Gleb Nikitin of Nizhny Novgorod confirmed extensive damage to the plant but reported no casualties.

Fire Impact and Operational Damage

The blaze affected key areas of the refinery, including the primary crude processing units AVT-6 and AVT-5, with possible damage also to the visbreaking and 35/11-600 units. The facility lies roughly 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. This is not the first time the refinery has been targeted; a similar drone attack caused a fire on the night of August 26, 2026.

Following the latest strike, residents nearby began queuing at gas stations amid fears of fuel shortages. Governor Nikitin stated that Russian air defenses claimed to have intercepted over a hundred drones over the region.

“I acknowledge significant damage to the industrial site in the Kstovo district; fortunately, there are no injuries,” the governor said.

It is important to understand these Ukrainian strikes are largely seen as retaliatory actions against Russia’s assaults on energy infrastructure and attacks on civilians, such as the deadly strike on the Dnipro train station on October 29, which killed 15 people. Christopher Miller, the Financial Times’ chief correspondent in Ukraine, has noted Kyiv’s cautious approach to hitting oil refineries, especially after warnings from former U.S. President Donald Trump.

This recent attack underscores the intensifying conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Such operations have strategic implications by disrupting Russia’s energy security and causing social repercussions like fuel shortages and long queues. Given the repeated nature of these strikes, they appear to be part of a sustained tactical pattern by both sides in the ongoing war.

In addition to the recent strike on the LUKOIL refinery, similar drone attacks have been reported across Russia, highlighting a pattern of escalating hostilities. For instance, a recent incident resulted in significant explosions and fire at an oil terminal in Rostov-on-Don. Such events illustrate the ongoing and intensifying conflict between Ukraine and Russia. To learn more about these developments, click here.
