Ukraine Advances Electrical Welding of Living Tissue in Medicine

According to Главком: Ukraine's military and civilian hospitals are increasingly adopting a pioneering method-electrical welding of living tissue-developed by the E. O. Paton Institute of Electric Welding. This innovation dramatically shortens surgery time and reduces blood loss, a critical advantage as the country endures a full-scale war.

The first tests of this technology took place at the Mykola Pyrogov First Volunteer Mobile Hospital. Building on that success, specialists from the National Center of Surgery and Transplantation named after Oleksandr Shalimov, working alongside trauma surgeons from the Ministry of Internal Affairs hospital, performed a procedure to transplant two bone segments, each 22 centimeters long, in a single operation. By instantly and reliably sealing blood vessels, the method cuts blood loss by 30–40%.

“When a surgeon cuts tissue, bleeding always occurs. In classical surgery, stopping the bleeding requires applying a clamp and tying off the vessel. That can consume over 70% of the total operation time.” - Vladyslav Horbovets

Beyond reducing blood loss, electrical welding of living tissue can shorten surgical procedures by three times, and in some cases by five to ten times. This greatly eases the burden on surgeons, who face rising cases of stress-induced cardiomyopathy and other complications amid the war. Ukraine has been in a state of continuous critical stress for over four years, underscoring the urgent need for medical innovation.

Key Benefits of the New Approach

Because the technique minimizes tissue damage, patients recover much faster-an essential advantage in a resource-constrained environment. Advances like electrical welding of living tissue open new possibilities for saving lives and improving the quality of medical care in Ukraine.

Innovative medical technologies such as this one can play a vital role in boosting treatment effectiveness during wartime. Shorter surgeries and reduced blood loss not only enhance surgical outcomes but also lessen the strain on a healthcare system struggling with a surge in casualties. This progress highlights the importance of ongoing research and innovation in Ukraine’s health sector, especially given the prolonged military conflict.

As advancements in surgical techniques continue to emerge, the success of various methods becomes increasingly relevant. One such breakthrough is the Ukrainian technique for vein welding, which has achieved a remarkable 100% success rate over an extensive eight-year study. This highlights the potential for innovative approaches to significantly enhance patient outcomes in a challenging medical landscape.
