According to Главком: During a routine count of penguin chicks on Booth Island, researchers from Ukraine's 30th Antarctic expedition made a remarkable discovery: a king penguin near the 'Akademik Vernadsky' station. This sighting is exceptionally rare, as king penguins typically reside thousands of kilometers from Galindez Island, where the station is located. The nearest known colony is approximately 2,000 kilometers away. The Ukrainian Antarctic program is part of a long-standing international scientific effort to monitor this remote continent.

Penguin Species of Booth Island

Booth Island is normally home to three breeding penguin species: gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie. In total, five penguin species inhabit the Antarctic region. King penguins are the second-largest species, standing about one meter tall and weighing up to 18 kg. They are distinguished by vibrant orange markings on their cheeks, necks, and beaks. Unlike other local species, they do not build stone nests; instead, they incubate a single egg on their feet.
