Ukraine's Grid Operator Details Russian Assault: Over 900 Substation Strikes and a New Tactical Shift

Ukrenergo on RF attacks: over 900 hits on substations
Оператор енергосистеми України повідомляє про напад Росії: понад 900 атак на підстанції і нові військові стратегії.

Assaults on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine's national power company, Ukrenergo, has reported that the country's energy grid has endured massive attacks since the full-scale invasion began four years ago. Since the start of 2026 alone, Russian forces have launched over 300 missiles and 7,000 drones at energy facilities. Since 2022, Ukrenergo's substations have been hit in more than 900 separate attacks, with some individual sites suffering over 30 strikes. A particularly intense assault on February 22 marked a new phase, as Russia for the first time directly targeted water supply infrastructure. These relentless attacks aim to cripple civilian life and pressure Ukrainians to flee.

Russia's New Strategy and International Aid

Since the latter half of 2025, Russia has shifted its strategy, now aiming for the total destruction of power generation and networks in specific regions. This new tactic is a deliberate attempt to undermine Ukraine's energy stability and resilience. In response, international aid for Ukraine's energy sector has reached nearly 623 million euros. This funding has been used to purchase 1,270 units of high-voltage equipment and 310 specialized vehicles to facilitate repairs.

Furthermore, Ukraine's energy storage capacity has grown significantly, from just 2 MW at the start of the invasion to over 503 MW today. The situation underscores the critical importance of supporting Ukraine's national energy infrastructure and the ongoing need for international assistance. This support is vital not only for immediate repairs but also for building long-term energy security and independence amid a protracted war.
