Ukrzaliznytsia's New Service for Passengers with Disabilities

According to Главком: Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway operator, has introduced a new service enabling passengers with disabilities to purchase discounted tickets online through a special reservation system in its app, eliminating the need to visit a ticket office. This innovation aims to simplify the ticket-buying process for people with mobility challenges, who previously faced difficulties when planning journeys. This move aligns with broader European efforts to make public transport more accessible.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the railway's fleet includes 54 carriages with inclusive compartments, plus a dedicated inclusive carriage that can accommodate up to eight passengers using wheelchairs or other mobility aids. This infrastructure is designed to provide comfortable travel conditions for individuals with special needs.

Previously, passengers had to travel to the station to arrange this, which created additional difficulties. We have worked for a long time to change this process, as the ticket sales system required significant modifications. It was a challenging journey for the team, but we managed to find a solution, and today this service has become available. - Ukrzaliznytsia

How to Use the New Service

For those wishing to use the new service, there is a simple step-by-step process. To buy a discounted ticket for passengers with a disability, you must:

  • Update the Ukrzaliznytsia app.
  • Log into your profile.
  • Click 'Add Concession' and enter your certificate number.
  • If required, enable the 'Wheelchair user' checkbox.

Following these steps will grant the passenger and any companions access to seats in special compartments, adapted primarily for wheelchair users. The relevant carriages will automatically appear first among the available options. These seats are also available for people with musculoskeletal disorders and passengers using other rehabilitation aids (prostheses, crutches).

Thus, the launch of online sales for discounted tickets is a significant step toward improving travel accessibility and convenience for people with disabilities.

The implementation of this service marks considerable progress toward inclusion and ensuring equal opportunities for people with limited mobility. By simplifying the ticket purchase process, passengers with disabilities gain greater freedom to travel, which can positively impact their social engagement. This service also underscores the importance of adapting infrastructure and services to meet the needs of all citizens, a crucial aspect of a modern society.

In addition to the new ticketing service for passengers with disabilities, it's important to consider how other groups, such as pensioners, are also benefitting from recent changes in public transport policies.
