Drone strikes hit Tatarstan and Moscow

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: In the early hours of August 10, unmanned aerial vehicles struck targets in Tatarstan, Moscow, and Rostov Oblast. One of the refineries in Nizhnekamsk, located in Tatarstan, was hit; officials had not clarified by the time of publication which of the two local oil-processing plants was affected. Local residents reported explosions, while social media footage showed drones flying overhead and thick black smoke rising.

What to know about the refineries

Nizhnekamsk is home to two major refineries, TAIF-NK and TANECO. TAIF-NK is designed to process 7.3 million metric tons of crude oil and 1 million metric tons of natural gas condensate annually, turning out 49 product types that include AI-92 and AI-95 gasoline as well as diesel and jet fuel. TANECO, owned by the Tatneft group, has an annual capacity of more than 16 million metric tons of crude oil.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 18 drones were shot down over the capital and falling debris was recorded. Rostov Oblast Governor Yuri Slyusar reported that more than 70 drones were intercepted in his region. In response, Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) imposed temporary restrictions on departures and arrivals at several airports, including:

  • Begishevo
  • Orenburg
  • Izhevsk
  • Ufa
  • Cheboksary
  • Domodedovo
  • Saransk
  • Kazan
  • Vnukovo

Meanwhile, authorities in Nizhnekamsk continue to monitor the situation, as the drone raids have caused concern among residents and oil-processing businesses. Official reactions to the incidents and any further developments remain under close watch.

These drone attacks signal rising tensions in the region, with possible implications for Russia's energy security and economic stability.

Authorities are pressing on with measures to protect critical infrastructure, and close attention to Nizhnekamsk remains crucial given the possibility of additional threats.
