Von der Leyen's Statement on Ukraine's EU Membership Bid

According to ХВИЛЯ: During a press conference in Kyiv, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that it is currently impossible to set a concrete date for Ukraine's accession to the European Union. She emphasized that while Ukraine has shown significant progress in implementing reforms, the EU cannot commit to a fixed timeline due to its own internal procedures.

Von der Leyen noted that the reforms Ukraine is undertaking are complex and demanding. She acknowledged the enormous progress the country has achieved despite the immense difficulties posed by the ongoing war.

'These are tough reforms, not easy reforms. You need to convince many people to support them, to modernize the country. And it is very impressive, the enormous progress Ukraine is making despite fighting a war for its survival.' Ursula von der Leyen

Furthermore, Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the EU's commitment to provide Ukraine with 90 billion euros, irrespective of Hungary's position. She stressed that she understands how important a clear accession date is for Ukraine, but reiterated that the EU side cannot establish such dates unilaterally.

'I understand very well that a clear date is also important for you. The date you have set is your benchmark, which you want to meet. You know that on our side, dates by themselves are not possible. But, of course, our support for you to reach your goal is absolutely clear.' Ursula von der Leyen

The Critical Role of Reforms for European Integration

Von der Leyen's remarks highlight the complex situation Ukraine faces as it seeks to integrate into European structures while at war. While the country demonstrates substantial reform progress, the EU's internal processes and political considerations can influence the pace of accession.

The pledged financial support represents a significant step, demonstrating the EU's readiness to back Ukraine's European aspirations. This context underscores how crucial continued reforms are for Ukraine's advancement on its path toward EU membership, a process that requires alignment with extensive legal and political criteria.
