Discovery of a Hidden Word Filter in iOS

According to НВ — Техно: Security researcher Derek Kaufman uncovered a concealed "gray list" within iOS containing more than 100,000 words and phrases that Apple’s keyboard refuses to suggest through autocomplete. This extensive blocklist includes profanity, drug-related terms, references to violence and sex, as well as politically sensitive expressions like "dictator Trump" and "sleepy Joe." These entries are deliberately excluded to prevent their automatic completion while typing.

Other cybersecurity experts have verified Kaufman’s findings, confirming that attempts to input these blocked terms trigger autocomplete failures. Apple has not publicly disclosed the specifics or origins of this list but acknowledged that its keyboard settings aim to filter out inappropriate or offensive suggestions to enhance user experience.

Filtering Content in Text Suggestions

This "gray list" represents Apple’s effort to regulate the content shown in text predictions, promoting a safer and more respectful environment for users. The blocked categories include:

  • Profane and vulgar language
  • Obscene expressions
  • Drug-related terminology
  • Violence-related words
  • Sexual content
  • Politically sensitive phrases
  • Geopolitical and social terms

The revelation of this extensive filter highlights Apple’s ongoing commitment to content moderation and user safety. However, it also sparks debate about the boundaries of censorship in technology and its impact on free speech. While some users may appreciate these measures as necessary safeguards, others might view them as restrictions on personal expression. This dynamic influences how Apple’s products are perceived regarding openness and control.

As Apple continues to refine its content moderation policies, the recent implementation of an age restriction for dating apps and AI companions underscores the company's commitment to user safety. This move aligns with their efforts to filter out inappropriate content, raising further questions about the balance between protection and freedom of expression in the digital space.
