According to preliminary data, 56-year-old Baumgartner lost control of the paraglider and crashed into the swimming pool of a hotel complex. As a result of the impact, the athlete instantly lost consciousness – his heart stopped.

Austrian extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner died on Thursday, July 17, while flying a paraglider in Italy. This was reported by 'Glavcom' citing the Daily Mail.

Felix Baumgartner gained worldwide fame thanks to his risky jumps from the highest objects: skyscrapers, bridges, balloons. In 1999, he made a jump from the world's highest bridge – the Millau Viaduct in France, as well as from the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro, which brought him popularity among base jumpers and parachutists.

The most famous moment of his career occurred on October 14, 2012, when he, as part of the Red Bull Stratos project, ascended in a capsule to a height of nearly 39 km and jumped from the stratosphere. During free fall, he reached a speed of over 1350 km/h, becoming the first person to break the sound barrier without the aid of technology. This experiment was broadcast worldwide and was of great importance for science and medicine related to high-altitude flights.
