Stroke Treatment Landscape in Ukraine

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: Since the beginning of this year, Ukraine has successfully treated more than 90,000 stroke cases. Key warning signs of a stroke include:

  • sudden difficulty speaking;
  • uneven smile or facial drooping;
  • weakness or numbness affecting one side of the body, such as an arm or leg.

If any of these symptoms appear, it is critical to call emergency services immediately at 103.

The Importance of Emergency Medical Services

Emergency medical teams are vital in managing stroke cases. This year, 86% of stroke patients were transported to hospitals by ambulance crews. These teams follow optimized routes to reach healthcare facilities equipped for urgent diagnosis and treatment. Notably, last year all regions in Ukraine updated their emergency response routes to enhance patient outcomes.

Currently, 176 hospitals across Ukraine have agreements with the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) to provide stroke care. Diagnostic procedures, treatment, and medications covered under the Medical Guarantees Program are provided free of charge at these centers. Once the patient’s condition stabilizes, rehabilitation begins, also funded by the government through contracted facilities.

The rising number of stroke treatments highlights the critical need for rapid medical intervention. Improvements in emergency service routing and the availability of free hospital care represent significant advances in reducing stroke mortality rates. In today’s healthcare environment, effective rehabilitation is essential to help patients regain independence and quality of life after a stroke.

As the number of stroke cases continues to rise, the availability of free rehabilitation services becomes increasingly vital. With over 171,000 patients accessing these services across 587 medical facilities, the support for recovery is crucial in improving patient outcomes. This comprehensive approach to stroke care not only addresses immediate medical needs but also emphasizes the importance of long-term rehabilitation in restoring quality of life.
