Researchers have demonstrated that measuring apolipoprotein B (apoB) is a more reliable way to identify patients who need intensive therapy to lower their risk of heart attacks and strokes. Using computer modeling on a dataset of 250,000 adults, the study found that targeting an apoB level below 2.04 mmol/L allows doctors to fine-tune medication doses with greater precision. This biomarker counts the exact number of harmful cholesterol-carrying particles in the blood, which directly contribute to the buildup of plaque in artery walls.

For comparison, traditional targets focus on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol below 2.59 mmol/L or non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) cholesterol under 3.05 mmol/L. However, the scientists argue that apoB testing offers a more accurate method for pinpointing individuals who require extra medical attention. Although the apoB test requires additional lab work and raises upfront diagnostic costs, it proves cost-effective for healthcare systems in the long run. These expenses are offset by fewer hospitalizations due to cardiac events.
