Widows and Widowers Can Now Marry Online Through the Diia App Following Government Reforms

Expanded Online Marriage Options Available in the Diia App

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The Diia app has introduced new features allowing Ukrainians who have lost their spouse to apply for and register a marriage online. This development comes after regulatory updates approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in early August 2026.

Previously, widows and widowers were unable to file marriage applications online because the system required a formal record of divorce in the State Register of Civil Status Acts. Now, the platform verifies the death record of the former spouse to confirm the marriage’s dissolution. This update enables users to submit marriage applications digitally without needing physical certificates or in-person visits to civil registry offices.

The Evolution of Online Marriage Services in Ukraine

The Ministry of Justice, in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Transformation and supported by the Swiss-Ukrainian EGAP program managed by the East Europe Foundation, developed the "Marriage Online" service. Celebrating its second anniversary on September 9, 2026, the service has facilitated over 78,000 Ukrainian couples in formalizing their marriages digitally. In 2026, online marriages accounted for nearly 40% of all registered marriages nationwide, a significant increase from the initial adoption rate when only one in five couples chose this option.

According to the Ministry of Justice, these enhancements simplify the marriage process for widows and widowers, allowing them to embark on a new chapter in life quickly and without unnecessary bureaucracy.
