UK Rolls Out New Sanctions Targeting Russian Oil Firms, Shadow Fleet, and Crypto Exchanges
UK Unveils Fresh Sanctions Against Russia
According to Рубрика — Політика: The United Kingdom has announced a comprehensive new sanctions package aimed at curbing Russia's shadow fleet, oil companies, financial networks, and suppliers linked to the defense sector. According to the UK Foreign Office, these restrictions affect 38 individuals and entities, as well as 12 oil tankers used to circumvent existing sanctions.
The measures specifically target Russian oil giants Zarubezhneft and INK Capital, marking the UK as the first G7 nation to impose sanctions on Russia’s four largest oil producers. These restrictions cover over 90% of Russia's oil production capacity. In addition to the 12 sanctioned tankers, the UK has blacklisted more than 600 vessels belonging to the shadow fleet - ships that transport Russian oil using deceptive practices and falsified flags.
Sanctions Extend to Key Suppliers and Cryptocurrency Platforms
Seventeen companies and individuals associated with the supply of critical goods - including machinery, electronics, and materials essential for manufacturing ballistic missiles, drones, and other military equipment - have also been sanctioned. Many of these supplies are routed through third countries. Furthermore, sanctions have been imposed on three cryptocurrency exchanges and two payment platforms suspected of facilitating Russia’s evasion of financial restrictions. Notably, two of these entities processed transactions via the Kremlin-backed 'A7' financial network, which reported over $90 billion in transfers last year.
UK Foreign Office: “The message is clear: anyone assisting Russia in funding or equipping this war will be held accountable. By targeting these companies, we are cutting off critical revenue streams from Russian oil and blocking methods used to bypass sanctions, making it harder for major Russian oil firms to sell their products through unsanctioned channels.”
Additionally, European Union Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas announced plans for the EU to introduce a new, potentially the most extensive, sanctions package against Russia in the coming months, reflecting growing international resolve.
These UK sanctions form part of broader global efforts to restrict Russia’s military financing and disrupt sanction evasion tactics. They underscore mounting international concern over Russia’s influence on the global oil market and its capacity to sustain its military operations. The anticipated EU measures are expected to amplify this pressure, likely deepening Russia’s economic challenges and increasing its international isolation.
In light of these recent developments, it's important to note that the UK has implemented a broader range of sanctions, including measures against individuals involved in severe human rights violations.
