Price Check: Eggs Before Easter

According to Главком: A price monitoring survey in Kyiv's major supermarket chains on April 12, 2023, reveals a substantial increase in egg costs compared to the previous year. With Easter being celebrated on April 12, Ukrainian shoppers are facing significantly higher prices for this holiday staple. This surge is part of broader inflationary pressures affecting food costs across the country.

Supermarket Egg Prices

At the Ekomarket chain, unpackaged C1 category eggs cost 68.90 UAH per ten, a sharp rise from last year's price of 44.80 UAH per ten, marking an increase of over 53%. Other categories at Ekomarket include Svizhak C2 eggs at 80.90 UAH for ten, Svizhak C1 at 89.90 UAH for ten, and Svizhak C0 at 99.90 UAH per ten. Yasensvit eggs (size C0, select) are priced at 89.60 UAH for ten, while Yasensvit (size C1) cost 87.50 UAH for ten.

The Varus network also shows rising prices. An unpackaged C0 category egg costs 71.90 UAH without discounts. Last year, the promotional price for a similar unpackaged C0 egg was 58.90 UAH. Eggs from "Vid Dobroi Kurky" (From a Good Hen) in category C2 remained stable at 69.80 UAH per ten, while the C0 category increased from 49.40 UAH to 79.40 UAH per ten, indicating a 60% price hike. Also at Varus, unpackaged chicken table eggs category C2 cost 56.90 UAH per ten.

At the Fora chain, the price for unpackaged eggs in categories C1 and C0 is 64.70 UAH per ten. Last year, these eggs cost 53 UAH, meaning the current price is 22% higher. "Vid Dobroi Kurky" eggs at Fora cost 68.90 UAH last year. Other offers in the Fora network include:

  • Zirkovyi Vybir eggs (category C1) at 76.90 UAH for 10 pcs.
  • Eggs category C0 at 79.90 UAH for 10 pcs.

Prices have also risen at the Metro chain. Aro eggs category C0 (30 pcs.) cost 249.00 UAH, and category C2 (30 pcs.) cost 229.00 UAH. Metro Chef eggs category C0 (18 pcs.) are priced at 149.00 UAH. Before Easter 2025, a pack of 30 C1 category eggs at Metro cost 119.90 UAH, whereas a similar volume now costs 229–249 UAH. Last year, higher-category Metro Chef eggs cost 49.90 UAH per ten, while today the price has risen to 84.50 UAH per ten.

Therefore, the price monitoring for eggs in Kyiv supermarkets ahead of Easter demonstrates a significant increase, which may impact the budgets of Ukrainians during the holidays.

The rise in egg prices in Kyiv supermarkets before Easter reflects a general trend of increasing food costs in Ukraine. Amid economic instability and inflation, such changes can negatively affect consumer spending, especially during holiday periods when demand for food products traditionally spikes. Ukrainians planning festive gatherings may need to adjust their budgets to compensate for these price hikes.
