Stepfather Accused of Raping 13-Year-Old Girl in Vinnytsia Region

According to Главком: A man in the Vinnytsia region has been formally charged with the rape of his 13-year-old stepdaughter. The assault occurred in the summer of 2024 when the suspect, who was living with the victim's family at the time, entered their home. The girl's mother was not present, leaving the victim alone with a younger child. While the younger child was playing in another room, the man raped his stepdaughter.

Fearing her abuser and potential public exposure, the girl did not report the crime immediately. However, in February 2025, during a conversation with a psychologist at a social services center, the now 15-year-old disclosed the assault.

"In February of this year, juvenile prosecutors received information from social services about possible sexual violence against a child," stated the Office of the Prosecutor General.

Upon receiving this information, prosecutors initiated criminal proceedings, identified the suspect, and formally notified him of the charges in February 2026. This case highlights the critical role of psychological support in helping victims of abuse come forward, often after a significant delay.

Suspect's Background and Legal Proceedings

The suspect, who has prior administrative and criminal records for domestic violence, is currently in custody serving a sentence for other crimes. He had lived with the victim's family for approximately three years and has a biological child with the girl's mother. The prescribed punishment for the rape of a minor is imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years. The criminal investigation is ongoing, with investigative actions being conducted according to the Barnahus model, a child-friendly, multi-disciplinary approach to justice.

This incident underscores the severe issues of domestic and sexual violence against children in Ukraine. The work of professionals like psychologists is vital in enabling victims to access necessary support and share their experiences, a crucial step toward achieving justice. The ongoing investigation and subsequent court proceedings may serve as an important signal to society about the necessity of combating such crimes and protecting vulnerable children.
