Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko to Report to Parliament on October 14 Amid Power Outages
Vitali Klitschko Summoned to Ukraine's Parliament
According to 5 канал: Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, is scheduled to appear before the Verkhovna Rada on October 14 at 12:00 PM to provide an update on the city's ongoing electricity shortages. This parliamentary summons follows a series of power disruptions triggered by recent Russian missile strikes, which have severely impacted the operation of the metro, public transport, and water supply systems. The initiative to call Klitschko was backed by 151 members of parliament, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Widespread Electrical Failures Disrupt Kyiv's Infrastructure
On the evening of October 8, significant power outages caused multiple stoppages in Kyiv's metro service. The disruptions also affected other forms of public transportation, including trolleybuses and trams, leading to temporary suspensions in key districts such as:
- Holosiivskyi
- Solomianskyi
- Pecherskyi
- Shevchenkivskyi
- Darnytskyi
Water supply was also unreliable during this period, adding to the hardships faced by Kyiv residents.
Additionally, the blackout caused a surge in taxi fares due to increased demand. For instance, rides from Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) to Osokorky were priced as follows during peak evening hours:
- Standard class: 1101 UAH
- Comfort class: 1249 UAH
- Business class: 1362 UAH
Similarly, trips from Independence Square to Obolon cost:
- Standard: 876 UAH
- Comfort: 984 UAH
- Business: 1088 UAH
These fare hikes reflect the strain on urban transport amid ongoing infrastructure challenges.
“You can see what’s happening in the capital. We have never once summoned Klitschko before, and this is not a matter of political parties or forces,” said Mariyana Bezuhla.
Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk emphasized the importance of thorough preparation for the mayor’s briefing, stating, “Please get ready, inform us-we will be waiting for him.”
The call for Klitschko’s report underscores the critical state of Kyiv’s electricity supply, which is directly affecting residents’ daily lives. This parliamentary session not only highlights infrastructural vulnerabilities but also stresses the urgent need for government bodies to respond proactively amid wartime challenges. Addressing these issues at the national legislative level could pave the way toward stabilizing services and improving living conditions in Ukraine’s capital.
As Kyiv faces ongoing challenges with power outages impacting its infrastructure, the situation has prompted authorities to take decisive actions. The recent halt of metro and electric transport in response to drone strikes underscores the severity of the crisis, further complicating the daily lives of residents and commuters alike.
