Russian Attack on Dnister Hydro Plant Causes Oil Spill, Reaching Moldova

Leak of technical oils in Dniester
Внаслідок російського нападу на гідроелектростанцію на Дністрі відбулося витікання нафти, яке дійшло до Молдови.

Technical Oils Spill into the Dnister River

According to Главком: A Russian military strike on the Dnistrovska Hydroelectric Power Plant has caused a leak of technical oils into the Dnister River, with the resulting pollution now detected in the Republic of Moldova. According to Ukrainian authorities, the spill was discovered on March 10, 2026, near the village of Liadova in the Vinnytsia region. Preliminary findings indicate the contamination stems from transformer oil leaking from infrastructure at the Dnistrovska HES site in the Chernivtsi region. This incident highlights the growing threat of environmental warfare, where attacks on industrial sites create secondary, cross-border disasters.

The Russian attack that precipitated the leak occurred on March 7. Oil slicks formed in the river and have been carried downstream, with confirmed sightings in Moldova, specifically near the village of Naslavcea. In response, emergency and environmental safety commissions have convened in Ukraine's Vinnytsia and Odesa regions to manage the crisis.

Containment and Cleanup Efforts

Plans to localize and mitigate the pollution include:

  • Deploying containment booms;
  • Using sorbents to collect the oil slicks.
“The Russian Federation continues to commit international environmental crimes, using war as a tool to destroy ecosystems and create cross-border ecological threats.” - Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine

The Ministry further regards this event as another act of environmental aggression by the Russian Federation, posing a threat to transboundary water security and warranting proper international legal assessment. A spokesperson stated, “Damage to energy infrastructure caused the technical oil leak into the Dnister, creating a cross-border ecological threat.” Ukrainian authorities report the situation is under control, with all necessary measures being taken to minimize the incident's impact.

This spill underscores the severe environmental consequences of warfare, which can have international repercussions far beyond the battlefield. Pollution of vital water resources can affect ecosystems, public health, and agriculture in Ukraine and neighboring nations, making a coordinated international response to such threats increasingly urgent.
