Why Ukrainian Drivers Can’t Order Custom License Plates Online
How to Get a Personalized License Plate
According to ХВИЛЯ: In Ukraine, drivers cannot apply for a personalized license plate (PLP) remotely because all PLP data must be entered exclusively at a service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). Once you receive your PLP, you have 10 days to visit any convenient service center to re-register your vehicle.
The process requires that plates first be assigned to a specific car. The vehicle owner-or an authorized person with a power of attorney-must submit a request for this assignment. A service center administrator then records the information in the Unified State Register of Vehicles and issues a new registration certificate noting the PLP.
Required Documents and Rules for Using a PLP
To apply for a personalized license plate, the driver must bring:
- a passport with a registered address stamp;
- taxpayer identification card number;
- vehicle registration certificate;
- current license plates.
It is important to note that driving with a PLP before it has been officially assigned at a territorial MIA service center is illegal and can result in administrative penalties.
You can order a personalized plate either online through the Driver’s Cabinet or in person at a service center. Production takes up to 40 days, after which the finished set is stored at the Main Service Center of the MIA for one year. If the plate is not picked up within that time, it is destroyed.
Currently, the process for obtaining a personalized license plate in Ukraine remains highly formalized, which can create challenges for drivers.
The mandatory visit to a service center for plate assignment may be an obstacle for those seeking more convenient or faster registration options. This situation highlights the importance of following all administrative procedures to avoid fines and other negative consequences.
