Bulgaria Investigates Murder-Suicide Theory in Baffling Deaths of Six

According to Главком: Over the course of a week, the bodies of six people were discovered at two separate locations in Bulgaria, prompting a major investigation. Authorities are now exploring a potential murder-suicide scenario. Five of the deceased were members of a non-governmental environmental organization, while the sixth was a 15-year-old boy, the son of an acquaintance of one group member. Such incidents are exceptionally rare in the country.

Incident Circumstances

The first incident occurred near a mountain hut close to the Petrohan Pass in western Bulgaria, where three bodies were found. The building they were in had been set on fire. A week later, three more victims were discovered in a camper van near the Okolchitsa peak. Among them was the teenager; two of the deceased had head injuries. An autopsy on the third victim from the camper is still underway.

Investigators have released surveillance footage dated February 1, showing all six individuals saying goodbye to one another. Later, three of them were captured on camera during the arson of the hut. The group practiced Tibetan Buddhism, and books and banners related to this faith were found inside the premises. A relative of one victim informed investigators about psychological instability within the group.

Two pistols, a rifle, and four shell casings were found near the bodies. Forensic experts determined the shots were fired from close range. The investigation's primary working theory is murder-suicide or suicide. The Director of Bulgaria's National Police emphasized that

"this case has no precedent in our country"

- the Director of the National Police of Bulgaria. Acting Chief Prosecutor of the Sofia Appellate Prosecutor's Office, Natalia Nikolova, is also involved in the probe.

This tragedy has caused significant public and law enforcement concern, as a murder-suicide is an extremely rare occurrence in Bulgaria. The investigation aims not only to clarify the circumstances of the deaths but also to examine the psychological aspects of the group's life and dynamics. Key factors in the investigation may prove to be:
