Artemii Dymyd: A Soldier's Journey from Brazil to the Battlefield

According to Главком: On June 18, 2022, in the village of Bila Krynytsia, Mykolaiv region, 26-year-old Ukrainian soldier Artemii Dymyd was killed. He was known not only as a hero defending his country but also as an active participant in the Revolution of Dignity and a volunteer with the 'Azov' battalion, where he served in the special 'Harpun' unit. Artemii had returned to Ukraine from Brazil following the start of the full-scale invasion to defend his homeland. His death underscores the profound personal sacrifices made by those who answered the call to serve.

Artemii Dymyd died from mortar fire during a combat mission. He came from a family renowned for its cultural and educational contributions. His father, Mykhailo Dymyd, is considered the first rector of the Lviv Theological Academy. His mother, Ivanka Dymyd, is an icon painter, his grandmother, Lesia Krypiakevych, an artist. His great-grandfather, Ivan Krypiakevych, was a historian, and another great-grandfather, Artemii Tsehelskyi, was a priest and violinist.

Scouting and Military Service

Artemii Dymyd was deeply involved with 'Plast,' the Ukrainian scouting organization, eventually becoming a mentor. He joined 'Plast' at the age of seven, was a member of the 15th курінь УСП 'Order of the Iron Cross,' and later became an educator. He also participated in the Revolution of Dignity and, at the start of the occupation of Crimea, traveled to the peninsula to volunteer for the 'Azov' battalion. During his service, he saw combat in the Shyrokyne area and fought on the Kherson front.

Before the war, Artemii was living in Rio de Janeiro but returned to Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Upon his return, he served at the 142nd Special Operations Forces Training Center in Berdychiv. His memory is honored through a scholarship fund established in his name by the Ukrainian Catholic University in cooperation with 'Plast' and the 'Aviation of Galicia' brand, ensuring his legacy supports future generations.

Artemii left a lasting impression on many. His brother, Klymentii Dymyd, described him as a person who embodied life and joy, taking everything from life and being life itself. Fellow soldier Roman Lozynskyi recalled their time together on the front lines, where they relied on each other. Anastasiia Dmytruk shared memories of how Artemii left his past behind for service, trading his Harley-Davidson for a weapon. Oleg Tyahnybok noted that Artemii was a bright, active, erudite, and fearless individual.

Artemii Dymyd remains an example of dedication and heroism, whose memory will live on in the hearts of Ukrainians. His bravery and sacrifice have become a symbol of the resilience inspiring new generations to defend their homeland. Memorial initiatives like his scholarship fund highlight the importance of preserving his legacy and supporting Ukrainian youth who strive for peace and prosperity.
