The Story of Ilya Pokhylchuk

According to Главком: Ilya Pokhylchuk was born on August 1, 1992, in the village of Temyrivka, in the Zaporizhzhia region. He graduated from the Orikhiv Agricultural Technical School in 2013 and immediately began his mandatory military service in Donetsk. His story is one of repeated service and sacrifice during a decade of conflict. In 2014, he was captured by Russian forces but, after his release, continued serving in Zaporizhzhia until 2015. Following demobilization, he worked as a driver for an agricultural enterprise.

After Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Ilya relocated with his parents, first to Zakarpattia and then to the city of Kostopil in April of that year. In September 2024, he received a draft summons and underwent military training in France. Upon completing this training, he was assigned as a driver-electrician to the 225th Separate Assault Battalion, which was deployed near Chuhuiv and later in the Kursk region.

The Tragic Events

On December 11, 2024, Ilya's mother spoke with her son for the last time before his first combat mission. Tragically, on December 19, his parents were notified that Ilya had gone missing during a mortar attack on the battlefield. He was initially listed as missing in action in December 2024. It was not until February 2025 that an investigator from Poltava informed the family of a DNA match, which confirmed Ilya's death. His burial took place in the city of Kostopil.

Iryna Pokhylchuk, Ilya's mother: 'We were told nothing about the circumstances of Ilya's disappearance. We searched for him as best we could and held onto hope that he might be a prisoner. But in February of this year, an investigator from Poltava called and informed us of the DNA match... My husband and I are proud of our son and his heroism. Ilya was our only child-he was kind, responsible, and the best person for us.'

Ilya Pokhylchuk was laid to rest in the New Cemetery in Kostopil, where his memory will be honored by his family and loved ones. His death underscores the immense sacrifices made by Ukrainian soldiers in the defense of their nation's sovereignty. This painful account also highlights the critical importance of identifying the fallen on the battlefield, a process that provides crucial, if heartbreaking, closure for families. The memory of Ilya Pokhylchuk will live on in the hearts of his family, who continue to seek answers about his loss, reflecting the profound suffering endured by countless families throughout the ongoing war in Ukraine.
