Zaporizhzhia NPP reconnected to the power grid: how the local ceasefire worked
Zaporizhzhia NPP reconnected to the power grid
According to Главком: The repair of the power line near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been completed as part of a local ceasefire brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The repairs lasted from December 28 to December 29, and the connection of the line to the power grid became possible after two weeks of its disconnection.
This is the third case where temporary ceasefire agreements allowed for the reconnection of power lines. It is important to note that the tenth and longest complete power outage occurred at the end of October. The local ceasefire in December enabled the resumption of electricity transmission between the ZNPP and the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant (TPP).
“This connection is important as it provides a key route for electricity”
Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General
The restoration of electricity supply is critically important for the stability of the region and for meeting the energy needs of the population.
The restoration of electricity supply to the Zaporizhzhia NPP as part of the local ceasefire demonstrates the importance of diplomatic efforts to ensure stability in a region where energy infrastructure is at risk due to military actions. This case also highlights the significance of the IAEA as a mediator in achieving agreements that can save critical energy resources in times of conflict.
