Safety of Refueling with the Engine Off
According to hvylya.net: Many drivers enjoy refueling without turning off the engine. They think there is nothing wrong with it. However, specialists warn: such 'carelessness' can lead to unpleasant and real dangers.
Mechanics explain that when the engine is running, the pressure in the fuel system increases, which can lead to leaks in the fuel vapor collection system. This system, known as the EVAP system, is designed to prevent gasoline vapor emissions into the atmosphere.
If anything leaks, a message (Check Engine) quickly reaches the car's computer, which can lead to unnecessary repair costs.
Auto mechanics say that even a small leak can lead to serious breakdowns, including damage to the catalytic converter, which is significantly more expensive to repair. And if you don’t turn off the engine at the gas station to enjoy the air conditioning, you can also accelerate the wear of the EVAP system.
Just in case about fire safety. Gasoline ignites easily, so a single spark can cause a fire while the engine is running.
Experts recommend turning off the engine before refueling at the gas station to avoid overloading the fuel system, prevent problems, and conduct the refueling process safely.
Avoid refueling with the engine running, it is not only safer but will also help avoid unnecessary repair costs.
