Harmful Bacteria and Sugar’s Role

According to НВ — Техно: Recent research from NYU Langone Health highlights that consuming more sugar while on antibiotics can severely disrupt the gut microbiome. The study found a strong association between higher sugar consumption during antibiotic treatment and an increase in harmful bacteria, specifically Enterococcus faecium, among patients with blood cancer. This finding emphasizes the need to monitor sugar intake during antibiotic courses to protect gut health.

Study Details and Findings

Researchers analyzed 9,419 meals consumed by 173 hospitalized blood cancer patients undergoing antibiotic therapy. They discovered that every additional 100 grams of sugar consumed within 48 hours before starting antibiotics corresponded to a 21% reduction in the gut microbiome’s alpha diversity. Patients with elevated sugar intake also showed a notable rise in Enterococcus faecium, a bacterium known for causing difficult-to-treat infections.

The investigation included mouse experiments, where animals given the antibiotic biapenem alongside sucrose experienced a dramatic increase in Enterococcus levels-16.3 times higher by day three and 33.4 times higher by day six. These results suggest that sugar intake exacerbates the damaging effects antibiotics have on gut bacteria.

Blood cancer patients often receive prolonged antibiotic treatment, allowing for close monitoring of their diet and microbiome during hospitalization. Disruptions in their gut microbiota are linked to infections and poorer treatment outcomes. Upcoming clinical trials aim to determine whether reducing simple sugar consumption during and after antibiotic therapy can lessen gut damage.

These findings could significantly influence clinical care by introducing sugar intake management as a critical factor in improving treatment outcomes for blood cancer patients on antibiotics. Further research may lead to new dietary guidelines for individuals undergoing antibiotic therapy, potentially reducing complications and enhancing patient quality of life.

In light of the emerging evidence regarding the impact of dietary choices on treatment outcomes, it is also worth exploring how certain medications can influence survival rates in cancer patients. A recent decade-long study has revealed a correlation between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and improved survival among those undergoing immunotherapy. This connection underscores the importance of comprehensive treatment strategies that consider both pharmacological and nutritional factors.
