Ukraine U-21 falls to Japan U-21 in friendly

According to Главком: Ukraine’s under-21 football team lost 0-3 to Japan’s U-21 side in a friendly held in Gorišnica, Slovenia. The result came as a disappointment for the Ukrainian squad. Goals were scored by Nwadike in the 1st and 61st minutes, and by Umeki in the 8th minute. This was the second friendly for Ukraine’s U-21 team in June; earlier, the team had lost 1-3 to the United States.

Ukraine’s position in Euro 2027 qualifying Group H

Ukraine’s U-21 team currently sits third in Group H of the Euro 2027 qualifiers. Under head coach Melgosa, the team trails Turkey by 3 points and Croatia by 5 points. Ukraine’s next qualifying match is scheduled for September 26 against Turkey.

Beyond the team’s loss, a key development was the contract extension of Vitaliy Mykolenko with English club Everton. The defender’s new deal runs until the summer of 2029. Mykolenko has played for Everton since January 2022, when the club paid Dynamo Kyiv €23.5 million. This season, he has appeared in 36 matches across all competitions and recorded one assist. His previous Everton contract expired on June 30.

This friendly defeat raises questions about the team’s readiness for the upcoming crucial qualifiers. Dropping points in preparation matches could affect player morale, especially ahead of the clash with Turkey, where Ukraine needs to secure points to advance in the qualifying campaign. As for Vitaliy Mykolenko, his contract renewal with Everton underscores his steady role in the squad, which could boost his performance and confidence in future national team appearances.

In light of the recent defeats, the focus now shifts to the upcoming matches and the stability of key players. Notably, Mykolenko's contract extension with Everton until 2029 could play a crucial role in enhancing the team's performance and morale as they prepare for their vital qualifying match against Turkey. His continued presence in the club may provide the necessary boost for the national squad in the challenging weeks ahead.
