Olena Zelenska and Howard Buffett Tour Kyiv’s Revamped Sports Hub
First Lady and American Philanthropist Visit Loko Chokolivka
According to Главком: Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, and U.S. philanthropist Howard Buffett recently toured the newly accessible sports complex Loko Chokolivka in Kyiv. This site, neglected for over 35 years, has been transformed into a modern network of athletic facilities used by veterans, trainees from the Lokomotyv Academy, and employees of Ukrainian Railways. For the visit, Zelenska wore a blue outfit consisting of wide-leg jeans, a T-shirt, and a blazer, paired with white sneakers and dark sunglasses.
The pair met with young athletes from the Lokomotyv (Kyiv) football club and participants in the Iron Shift project. The gathering provided a chance to engage with Ukrainian youth who, despite the ongoing war, continue to pursue education and excel in sports and academics. Zelenska highlighted the critical need to create new opportunities for young people in Ukraine.
“For more than 35 years, this sports area in Kyiv was largely abandoned. But now, the site has been dramatically transformed. Where there was once decay, a network of cutting-edge sports fields called Loko Chokolivka has emerged. Today, it serves as the neighborhood’s sports hub, hosting hundreds of children’s and adults’ training sessions, dozens of competitions, and other events each month.” - Olena Zelenska
Howard Buffett also contributed to the space’s renovation. His foundation supports demining efforts, rehabilitation for Ukrainian defenders, and school nutrition reform. The sports complex is open to local residents, underscoring its value to the community.
International Collaboration and Youth Empowerment
This visit by Olena Zelenska and Howard Buffett highlights ongoing efforts to boost sports development and support for Ukraine’s youth, as well as the significance of international partnerships in these initiatives.
The revival of the Loko Chokolivka sports complex marks a key step in promoting physical activity and social integration among young Ukrainians, especially amid the country’s challenging circumstances. The project shows how cross-border cooperation can positively impact local communities by granting access to modern athletic amenities and resources. It also underscores the vital role charitable organizations play in restoring and sustaining social programs in Ukraine.
