President Zelensky’s Statement

According to Рубрика — Політика: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that elections could be held if a full ceasefire lasting 60 days is implemented. Speaking in an interview with ABC News, he emphasized that the decision to elect the country’s leader rests with the Ukrainian people. However, he acknowledged that organizing elections during an ongoing conflict presents significant challenges due to security concerns, legal restrictions, and constitutional limits.

Zelensky explained:

“We are at war, and holding elections is truly difficult-not only because of security issues but also because it conflicts with our laws and Constitution. The key requirement is to establish a secure environment that allows people to vote.”

Proposal for an Energy Ceasefire with Russia

The president also expressed willingness to enter an energy truce with Russia. Kyiv is prepared to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow ceases attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Zelensky appealed to then-US President Donald Trump to convey this message to Russia:

“If the Russians want us to stop targeting their oil refineries, we ask President Trump to send them a signal to stop attacking Ukraine’s energy facilities.”

He described this energy truce as a crucial initial step toward ending the war, stating, “This is a fair deal. It’s not the ideal solution-the best outcome would be to end the war and stop Putin-but the first step is an energy ceasefire.”

Previously, Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine should elect a new president to negotiate a peace agreement to end the conflict. Trump claimed that Zelensky had multiple opportunities to end the war but allegedly chose not to. Meanwhile, Ukraine is advancing legislative efforts to enable elections during martial law.

  • Seven parliamentary subcommittees have been established to draft election laws applicable during the state of emergency.
  • Plans are underway to introduce electronic voting options for Ukrainians living abroad.

Zelensky’s remarks highlight the complexity of conducting elections amid ongoing war, where security and legal frameworks are critical concerns. At the same time, the energy truce initiative may represent a significant move toward easing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, although such agreements carry inherent risks. Together, these developments illustrate Ukraine’s leadership efforts to stabilize the nation while navigating the difficulties of wartime governance.

In light of President Zelensky's recent comments on the potential for elections under specific conditions, it is crucial to consider the broader implications of his proposal for an energy truce. This initiative could pave the way for a more stable environment, which is essential for any electoral process.
