Status of Ukraine's Energy System

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on February 2nd that the country's energy grid has been stabilized following a major technical failure that occurred on Saturday. He stated that Ukrainian energy workers have fully restored the system's operational state, but significant challenges remain due to extremely cold weather and the ongoing impact of Russian attacks. This comes as Ukraine's energy infrastructure remains a primary target in the ongoing conflict.

Throughout the day, Russian forces continued shelling energy facilities in frontline and border communities. While no targeted missile or Shahed-type drone strikes on energy infrastructure were recorded, the Russian military focused its actions on terrorizing Ukrainian logistics, primarily the railway system. Railway facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions came under attack.

Heating Issues and Repair Efforts

In Kyiv, more than 200 buildings remain without heating, mainly due to the aftermath of accidents. Repair crews from various regions of Ukraine have been mobilized, with over two hundred teams currently working. The situation is further complicated by the fact that, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, one-tenth of communication base stations are not functioning due to power outages.

Complex situations with power outages are being observed in:

  • Kropyvnytskyi and its region
  • Poltava region
  • Dnipropetrovsk region
  • Cherkasy region
  • Communities bordering Russia

As a result of enemy attacks, consumers in the Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, and Cherkasy regions were left without power. Repair work continues on energy facilities damaged by hostile attacks.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also issued a series of instructions to the Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, and the head of 'Ukrzaliznytsia' (Ukrainian Railways). He expects these instructions to be carried out today. Furthermore, the president instructed the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and regional and local administrations to check the operation of all support and heating points across Ukraine. Regardless of their current level of use, these points must be ready for any developments due to the cold snap.

"Zelenskyy emphasized the need to adjust outage schedules, taking into account the large number of households that rely on electric heating."

The situation in Ukraine remains tense due to a combination of technical problems within the energy system and constant threats from Russian forces. The deployment of over two hundred repair crews demonstrates the state's active efforts to restore infrastructure, but challenges, particularly the cold weather, may complicate these processes. The emphasis on checking heating and support points for the population during winter frosts further underscores the seriousness of the situation Ukrainians are facing.
