Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Statement

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has responded to a New York Times report discussing potential alternative names for the Donbas region in negotiations. Zelenskyy, speaking during an online briefing reported by 'Glavcom', stated that only universally recognized terms are used in official talks, and the terminology employed in these negotiations is strictly limited. He was commenting on a publication that suggested informal proposals for renaming parts of the contested territory.

According to The New York Times, Ukrainian representatives informally proposed the name 'Donnyland'-a blend of 'Donbas' and 'Donald'-for a portion of the region during closed-door talks involving Ukraine, the US, and Russia. Several sources familiar with the consultations confirmed this proposal.

Zelenskyy emphasized that his negotiations employ no other terms except:

  • Donetsk Oblast
  • Luhansk Oblast
  • our Donbas
  • Ukrainian territory
“In my negotiations, there are no other terms besides Donetsk Oblast, Luhansk Oblast, our Donbas, Ukrainian territory. There are no other terms.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The President added that he cannot comment on any informal dialogues of various natures between the parties, stating: 'As for other names, I cannot comment for you on any dialogues of various natures between the parties.'

The Significance of the Territories for Ukraine

Zelenskyy stressed the critical importance of preserving Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts as Ukrainian land. “In my view, the main thing is that Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts remain Ukrainian land, as they are,” he underscored. He also expressed hope that such alternative names would not lead to new geopolitical risks, noting: 'So that there is no Putinland. That, it seems to me, is the most important thing.' This remark highlights concerns over narratives that could legitimize territorial claims.

President Zelenskyy's comments underscore the importance of maintaining terminology that reflects Ukraine's sovereignty over Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. In the context of the ongoing conflict and international tensions, such statements demonstrate Ukraine's need for a clear, unwavering position in negotiations and an effort to avoid any steps that could be interpreted as concessions. The debate over names, even informal ones, can significantly influence international perceptions of the conflict's dynamics.

As the situation in the Donbas region evolves, it's crucial to understand the broader implications of Zelenskyy's stance on territorial integrity.
