Ukraine’s President Comments on U.S. Mediation Efforts

According to Рубрика — Політика: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed openness to U.S. President Donald Trump acting as a mediator in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. However, Zelensky emphasized that Trump must remain neutral and not side with Russia. These remarks came during an interview on the program Piers Morgan Uncensored, where Zelensky responded to questions about recent U.S.-Russia agreements on diesel fuel supplies and Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire.

Details of Trump and Putin’s Agreement

On October 9, Donald Trump revealed an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin allowing diesel fuel from Russia to enter U.S. and global markets, describing the deal as advantageous for the United States. Trump also publicly thanked Putin for the arrangement. Following discussions between Ukrainian and American delegations in Miami, Trump declared an energy ceasefire set to begin on October 11. President Zelensky noted that he was surprised by Trump’s announcement of the ceasefire. From October 12 onward, Ukraine refrained from attacking Russian energy facilities in accordance with this ceasefire, but Russian forces continued targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and fuel stations.

Zelensky voiced concerns that easing sanctions on Russia without a robust, long-term de-escalation plan could enable Moscow to sustain its military campaign. He stated:

"A mediator must remain impartial and not take the wrong side. I believe his advisors are mistaken." Volodymyr Zelensky

He also lamented the weakening partnership with the United States:

"It’s unfortunate that we are losing a strong ally. That is my perspective." Volodymyr Zelensky

Highlighting the critical nature of the situation for Ukraine, Zelensky stressed:

  • "Friends, this is not a business matter for us."
  • "This is our life, our country, our bodies, our homes, our children."
  • "And it matters deeply to us."

These statements underline how vital international backing remains for Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia. Zelensky’s comments reveal apprehension about the consequences of U.S.-Russia deals, particularly regarding the maintenance of sanctions against Moscow. While leaving the door open to mediation, Zelensky aims to ensure that U.S. collaboration continues to align firmly with Ukraine’s interests during this complex geopolitical crisis.
