Zelenskyy Warns: Middle East Conflict Could Jeopardize Ukraine's Air Defense Supplies
Ukrainian President's Concerns
According to Главком: In an interview with Rai Italia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed concern that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could negatively impact military support for Ukraine. He specifically warned that in the event of a prolonged war, the United States might reduce deliveries of air defense systems (ADS) to his country. This comes as Western military aid is crucial for Ukraine's ability to defend its cities and critical infrastructure from daily aerial attacks. Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine is prepared to offer assistance to Middle Eastern nations in stabilizing the situation and protecting civilians.
The President noted that Iran had previously supplied weapons to Russia, which were used against Ukrainians. However, he said this concern has now significantly diminished, as Iran is unlikely to be capable of providing military aid to Russia at this moment. Zelenskyy added that Iran had provided licenses to the Russian Federation, enabling Russia to independently produce missiles and drones.
Military Support and Threats
Zelenskyy voiced apprehension regarding signals from the United States about continuing its military operation in the Middle East. He stated that the U.S. would need to allocate additional air defense systems for itself and its allies.
“The concern is that in the case of a long war, America may reduce supplies of air defense, missiles for air defense, to Ukraine,” he said.
On March 4, Zelenskyy reported that a strategically important trilateral meeting involving the United States could not be held due to destabilization in the Middle East.
The threat posed by Iranian attack drones and missiles continues to destabilize the region and the global market.
President Zelenskyy's statements underscore the critical importance of continued international military support for Ukraine, especially within the context of global conflicts that can shift allies' priorities. A reduction in air defense system deliveries could severely compromise Ukraine's defensive capabilities, potentially worsening the situation on the front lines. The Middle East situation is likely to influence geopolitical calculations, which could have long-term consequences for security in Europe and the wider region.
