Zelenskyy Honors Fallen Heroes of Moshchun, the Decisive Battle for Kyiv in March 2022
Honoring the Fallen Defenders of Moshchun
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has paid tribute to the memory of the defenders who fell in the village of Moshchun, a critical defensive line during the initial Russian assault on Kyiv in the early days of the full-scale 2022 invasion. The ceremony took place at the 'Angels of Victory' memorial, where Zelenskyy lit a lamp at the stele as a mark of respect and remembrance.
During the commemoration, the president spoke with the families and loved ones of the fallen soldiers, expressing his gratitude for their sacrifice.
'It is very important and right to honor the memory of the heroes who defended Moshchun, the Kyiv region, and our entire state. We are grateful to your relatives and loved ones. It is a great sorrow that they are not with us. They are in our lives, in our history. Thank you for defending Ukraine. Unfortunately, at such a high price,' Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated.
The Strategic Importance of Moshchun
The village of Moshchun became strategically vital in the fight against the Russian occupiers, who aimed to break through to the capital via the routes through Hostomel, Bucha, and Irpin. On March 20, 2022, Ukrainian defense forces halted the advance of Russian troops on the approaches to Kyiv and launched tactical counterattacks. Three days later, on March 21, 2022, Ukrainian military units completely drove the enemy out of Moshchun. This battle was a pivotal moment that helped prevent the capture of the capital in the war's first month.
'I wish everyone victory. It is very important for this war to end justly. It is very important that the boys did not give their lives in vain. We honor all whom you knew, and those who may be unknown. The main thing, known to all of us, is that they all did the most important thing: we are here, we are alive, Ukraine lives, our children are here. That is the most important thing,' the president emphasized during the tribute.
The commemoration of the fallen defenders in Moshchun underscores the importance of memory and dignity in wartime. Such acts help preserve the connection between past and present and sustain the moral spirit of society. Having become a symbol of heroism, the village of Moshchun continues to remind us of the sacrifices made in the struggle for Ukraine's independence.
As Ukraine continues to honor its heroes, the memory of those who fought valiantly during pivotal moments in the nation's history remains alive. This dedication is reminiscent of the tributes paid to the fallen defenders of the Heavenly Hundred, whose sacrifices paved the way for the democratic values that Ukraine upholds today. Understanding these connections deepens our appreciation of the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice.
