Zelensky Offers to Halt Strikes on Russian Refineries if Moscow Ends Attacks on Ukraine’s Energy Sector
President Zelensky’s Statement
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed readiness to stop Ukraine’s strikes against Russian oil refineries, conditional on Russia ceasing its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. He emphasized that any steps toward de-escalation must be mutual and backed by genuine guarantees. Zelensky also highlighted ongoing coordination with European leaders to prepare additional defense aid, including air defense systems and ammunition for combat aircraft.
Recent Attacks and Their Impact
Over the past week, Russia has launched approximately 1,450 aerial bombs, 75 various types of missiles, and more than 1,640 attack drones against Ukraine. Notably, about 60% of these drones are jet-powered. In Zaporizhzhia, search and rescue operations concluded following a Russian airstrike that claimed 23 lives, including four children. Zelensky expressed his gratitude to the emergency responders managing the aftermath of these brutal assaults.
'I am deeply thankful to all our emergency services who stand by our people and work tirelessly to mitigate the consequences of Russia’s ruthless strikes. Just this morning, search and rescue efforts ended in Zaporizhzhia, where 23 people were killed, four of them children.' Volodymyr Zelensky
Furthermore, Russia targeted a medical facility in Kharkiv yesterday and struck a five-story residential building in Sloviansk, destroying the entrance and leaving people possibly trapped under the rubble. 'Yesterday, Russian forces hit a medical institution in Kharkiv. Overnight, there were attacks on civilian infrastructure, residential buildings, and energy facilities. This morning, Russians struck a five-story apartment building in Sloviansk – the entrance was completely destroyed, and people may be trapped under debris,' the President reported.
Zelensky also remarked on plans to continue coordination with international partners, noting upcoming discussions with European leaders as vital for Ukraine during this challenging period.
The President’s offer to explore de-escalation signals an attempt to seek diplomatic progress amid ongoing Russian aggression. However, the scale and severity of recent bombardments highlight the harsh realities Ukraine faces. Strengthening international cooperation and securing support from Europe remain critical for Ukraine’s defense and regional stability.
As the situation evolves, Zelensky's proposal raises critical questions about potential pathways to peace. For further insights on his stance regarding military actions against Russian refineries and the implications for Ukraine's energy security, read more in our detailed analysis here.
