Hopes for Unanimous EU Support

According to Главком: During a press conference in Dublin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism that all European Union member states-including Poland and Hungary-would unanimously back Ukraine’s bid for EU membership. He emphasized that Kyiv has fulfilled all prerequisites to advance accession negotiations, despite the challenges posed by the ongoing full-scale war. Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine is not only defending its own sovereignty but also safeguarding the security of Europe as a whole, positioning the country as a key partner in regional stability.

The press conference took place as Ireland assumed the rotating presidency of the EU Council. Zelenskyy also addressed relations with Poland, urging both sides to prevent historical disputes from hindering bilateral progress.

“We have certain difficulties in our history. But most countries have difficult pasts. However, we are living in the present, facing aggression against us, and we must be united now,” Zelenskyy stated.

He underscored the importance of prioritizing future security for the population and finding solutions if both nations aim to be strong neighbors.

Cooperation with Poland and Ukraine’s Reconstruction

Zelenskyy highlighted the recent Ukraine Recovery Conference held in Gdańsk, Poland, which brought together Polish government leaders along with thousands of business representatives and international partners. This initiative reflects joint efforts to support Ukraine during the war and address the urgent need for economic rebuilding.

On June 19, however, Polish President Karol Nawrocki made the decision to strip Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. The move was triggered by a controversy over the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). In response, several Ukrainian officials announced they would return their Polish awards, and Zelenskyy stated that he had mailed the order back to Poland.

“Despite Orbán and everything else, we have done everything. I hope that Péter Magyar supports this. I also hope the Polish government supports it,” Zelenskyy concluded.

Zelenskyy’s remarks in Dublin underscore Ukraine’s ongoing push for European integration amid political and historical tensions. Support from Poland and other EU member states remains critical for Ukraine, given the current military situation and the need for international solidarity. The Gdańsk recovery conference demonstrates active collaboration that could help drive Ukraine’s post-war economic revival.

The recent tensions with Poland have led to significant diplomatic developments, including the return of a prestigious award by Zelenskyy. This situation underscores the complexities of Ukraine's international relations as it seeks to strengthen its ties with European partners while navigating historical disputes.
