Fuel Shortage Forces Vorskla Women's Team to Miss Crucial Championship Match
Vorskla Fails to Appear for Match
According to Главком: The women's football team Vorskla (Poltava) did not appear for their scheduled match in the championship group of the Ukrainian Women's Higher League against Metalist 1925 (Kharkiv) on March 24 in Shchaslyve, Kyiv Oblast. The reason for the no-show was a lack of transportation, as the team's bus had not been refueled. This incident highlights the operational challenges some clubs face beyond the pitch.
Vorskla's head coach, Yevhen Kravchenko, confirmed the team was at the stadium at 6 a.m. as planned, but the departure was canceled due to the empty fuel tank.
“The team was at the stadium on schedule. The departure was planned for 6 a.m., but there was no fuel in the bus – we were told there would be no trip. I cannot provide any further comments at this time,” Kravchenko noted.
Vorskla's Broader Struggles
Heading into the match, Metalist 1925 led the Higher League with 51 points, while Vorskla trailed by 5 points despite having played one more game. In the previous season, Vorskla were the champions, with Metalist 1925 taking the silver medals.
The situation at Vorskla is compounded by financial problems linked to the case against the club's honorary president, Kostyantyn Zhevago, who is accused of forming a criminal organization, embezzlement, and money laundering.
Furthermore, the team has suffered a significant personnel loss: Ukrainian national team player Nicole Kozlova sustained a severe knee injury (a torn cruciate ligament) during a 2027 World Cup qualifier against England and will be unable to return this season.
Consequently, Vorskla finds itself in a difficult position that could negatively impact its championship campaign. The team's failure to appear for the match could severely affect its standing in the league table, as Vorskla aims to maintain its position among the league leaders. The financial difficulties and squad issues only intensify this situation, threatening not only sporting achievements but the future of the club overall. Support from fans and sponsors could prove vital in overcoming these challenges.
