Freight train carrying ammonia derailed: dozens injured

Yesterday, a freight train carrying ammonia derailed in eastern Serbia.

Dozens of people were injured, reports the Associated Press. A state of emergency was declared in the city of Pirot on December 25, and the main international highway was closed.

'Authorities have asked residents not to leave their homes. More than 50 people have been hospitalized with symptoms of ammonia poisoning. One person has died, but it is not yet known if this is related to the poisoning,' the report states.

As a result of the accident, about 20 tankers carrying the toxic substance derailed, with at least one falling into the Nishava River, causing a violent reaction when the ammonia came into contact with water.

'Due to limited visibility caused by the leak, several vehicles crashed on the main highway leading to Bulgaria. Due to the Christmas holidays, police closed the highway and redirected traffic to local roads. The cause of the train derailment is still unknown,' the publication writes.

An ammonia leak can be flammable and lead to serious injuries or fatalities.
