Austrian Authorities Detain Investigative Journalist Mykhailo Tkach Amid Editorial Assignment; Colleague's Whereabouts Remain Unknown
Investigative Journalist Mykhailo Tkach Detained in Austria
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Mykhailo Tkach, head of investigative reporting at the Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda, was apprehended by Austrian authorities while on a professional assignment. His colleague, Yaroslav Bondarenko, was present at the time but his current location remains unconfirmed. The editorial team and Ukrainian diplomatic officials are actively working to clarify the circumstances surrounding Tkach’s detention and to ensure the protection of both journalists.
Tkach, who has previously encountered legal challenges during his investigative work, is currently held in custody and is in contact with a defense attorney. Since the arrest, Ukrainska Pravda has lost direct communication with him. The editorial office has already notified the Ukrainian embassy in Austria and the Austrian embassy in Ukraine. They have urged Austrian authorities to promptly disclose the reasons for the detention, guarantee Tkach’s access to legal and consular support, and allow him to communicate with his newsroom and family.
Response from Ukrainian Diplomats
Georgiy Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported that the Ukrainian embassy in Austria has formally requested information from Austrian officials regarding the detention. The Ukrainian consul has met with Tkach, but Austrian law enforcement continues to hold him in custody.
“We have been informed about Mykhailo Tkach’s detention. The Ukrainian embassy in Austria has already sought clarification from Austrian authorities on the circumstances. The consul is in contact with Austrian counterparts and has officially requested access to the detained citizen,” Tykhyi stated.
Ukrainska Pravda condemns the detention as unlawful and demands Tkach’s immediate release along with an official explanation from Austrian law enforcement. The outlet has also appealed to international journalism and human rights organizations for support. This is not the first time Tkach has faced detention; earlier in 2024, he and operator Yaroslav Bondarenko were briefly detained near the Poland-Belarus border while reporting on trade between Poland and Russia. Following intervention by the Ukrainian embassy, both journalists were released.
In 2020, evidence emerged that a listening device had been installed in Tkach’s home, prompting a police investigation into the illegal surveillance of the journalist. The current detention highlights the ongoing dangers faced by investigative reporters and underscores the critical role of international backing in safeguarding their rights.
The arrest has sparked outrage within journalistic and human rights communities, emphasizing the necessity of protecting freedom of expression and ensuring journalists’ safety amid increasing threats. This incident also illustrates the vital importance of swift and effective diplomatic action when journalists are detained for their work, a situation with potentially serious implications for press freedom in the region.
