100-year-old woman from Poltava takes first steps after a stroke: a story of rescue
100-year-old Poltava resident takes first steps in rehabilitation after a stroke
Lidiya Podmaistrovych is already 100 years old! This incredible woman worked in pharmacy her whole life: in a pharmacy, at a pharmaceutical warehouse, even in a military hospital. She is now retired. One day she decided to wash her face in the bathroom, and suddenly she felt unwell — and she fell... After that, she remembers nothing.
“I started washing my face in the bathroom, I suddenly felt ill — and I fell... And after that, I remember nothing,” recalls Mrs. Lidiya.
Her nephew found her unconscious and called an ambulance, which took her to the 1st City Clinical Hospital of Poltava. There, the doctors discovered that it was an ischemic stroke with a clot in the blood vessel of the brain.
To save the patient's life, thrombectomy was necessary. Mrs. Lidiya was transported to the Poltava Regional Clinical Hospital named after Sklifosovsky, where a team of neurosurgeons successfully performed the operation, removed the clot, and restored blood circulation. Currently, the woman's condition has been fully stabilized in the stroke department.
Rehabilitation Process
After this, the rehabilitation process began. Now Lidiya is working with a multidisciplinary team of the Rehabilitation Medicine Center of the Regional Hospital of Poltava.
“We are already trying to get her up and take the first steps — and there is already a result. Over time, Lidiya Ivanivna will be able to return to independent living,” says physical therapist Roman Lytvynov.
We are waiting for full recovery of health for Mrs. Lidiya and sending thanks to the medical staff for their teamwork. We wish Lidiya Ivanivna strength on her path to recovery!
Let us remind you that improving the rehabilitation system is one of the key projects of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
“Development of the rehabilitation system” is a project that fits into the National Strategy for Creating an Accessible Environment in Ukraine by 2030, initiated by the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska.
The main idea of this project is “Barrier-free is when you can go through the recovery path without obstacles,” which aligns with the principles of the nationwide social change campaign “Barrier-free is when you can.”
