He passed away on April 26, 1945, in Metten, Germany. A lieutenant general in the Russian Imperial Army and later a corps otaman for the Ukrainian People's Republic, his career peaked when he served as Hetman of All Ukraine from April 29 to December 14, 1918. This period marked a pivotal chapter in Ukraine's brief independence efforts after World War I.

Skoropadskyi came from a distinguished Ukrainian Cossack lineage, the Skoropadskyi family. He was a descendant of Ivan Skoropadskyi through the latter's brother, Vasyl. His childhood was spent at the family estate in Trostianets, in the Sumy region. His grandfather, also named Ivan Skoropadskyi, served as the governor of Poltava and lived from 1805 to 1887.
