The bodies of defenders who died in Russian captivity were returned to territory controlled by Ukraine

According to glavcom.ua: The Office of the Prosecutor General reported that during repatriations, the bodies of at least 25 defenders who died in Russian captivity were returned to territory controlled by Ukraine. The causes of death included traces of electric shock, multiple fractures, hemorrhages, and significant weight loss due to starvation. This was reported by 'Glavcom' citing 'Investigations.Info'.

According to the results of forensic examinations, there are grounds for claiming possible cruel treatment of 25 Ukrainian servicemen who were in captivity and whose bodies were returned during repatriations, it is stated.

The Office of the Prosecutor General noted that the bodies show putrefactive changes, making it impossible to obtain complete and objective information about the causes and circumstances of death: 'We can confirm that among the causes of death of Ukrainian prisoners of war are closed blunt trauma to the torso with multiple rib fractures, damage to the lungs and pleura; bruises to the head; hemorrhages in the soft tissues of the head; bruises and contusions on the face; hemorrhages in the soft tissues of the left thigh and left shin; abrasions in the forehead area; traces of electric shock, cachexia (a clinical syndrome that is accompanied by significant weight loss and can occur due to starvation, - 'Glavcom').'

The death of a journalist in Russian captivity

Human Rights Commissioner for Missing Persons Arthur Dobroserdov added that among the defenders who died in captivity, there were many cases of general body exhaustion. Overall, during the great war, over 16,000 bodies of fallen defenders have been returned to territory controlled by Ukraine during repatriations.

It is worth noting that on October 10, 2024, it became officially known about the death of journalist Viktoria Roschina in Russian captivity. The body of the journalist was returned to Ukraine in late February.

The return of the bodies of defenders who died in Russian captivity to territory controlled by Ukraine has raised deep concerns about the possibility of cruel treatment and lack of daily nutrition and medical care. The investigation into these deaths continues, and the number of returned bodies continues to grow.
