A Space First: Nysa's Triple Structure

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Astronomers have identified the first known asteroid made of three connected segments. The object, 44 Nysa-discovered in 1857-has been revealed as a triple-component body. Measurements taken with the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona and the Very Large Telescope in Chile put its dimensions at roughly 113 × 67 × 65 km. Until now, the only known multi-part asteroids had two lobes, created when two objects merged. In Nysa's case, the three sections appear to have gently collided, with molten rock fusing them into one body.

The likely story is that Nysa was once a single, much larger object. It may have been shattered by a powerful collision, after which some of the fragments came back together and reconnected.
