Among EU nations, Sweden shows the strongest support for Ukraine joining the bloc, with 91% backing

Who wants Ukraine in the EU most? Not Poland or Germany

According to Radiotrek — Світ: A poll released on 28 August 2026 reveals how EU citizens view Ukraine's potential membership. Sweden emerged as the most enthusiastic, with 91% of respondents in favour-the highest share recorded across the European Union.

Support is also strong in northern Europe: Finland and Denmark both stand at around 81–82%, Lithuania exceeds 72%, and Spain ranges between 65% and 68%. By contrast, in Germany, France, and Poland, only about half the population or fewer back Ukraine's accession.

Hungary records the lowest level of support, pointing to sharp divisions among EU members. These swings in public opinion could shape the accession process, as enlargement decisions require unanimous agreement from all member states. The findings are likely to inform discussions as Ukraine pursues its European path.

How EU citizens view Ukrainian membership

EU member states show starkly different views on Ukrainian accession. The strongest support comes from northern countries, suggesting they may be ready to champion Kyiv's European ambitions. At the same time, the scepticism seen elsewhere could complicate negotiations, since any enlargement step needs the consent of every EU government.
