Artifacts Recovered from an Alligator's Digestive Tract

According to НВ — Техно: On June 15 at 6:30 PM, authorities revealed that an alligator had ingested a stone spear point and a smooth rock. These items, retrieved from the reptile's stomach, date back to a period between 5000 and 6000 BCE. James Starnes, Director of the Surface Geology Division at the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, identified the objects, confirming that the spear tip was crafted by Indigenous peoples of the Americas.

Preliminary assessments suggest the artifacts may be approximately 8,000 years old. After examining photographs, Starnes determined that one item is a projectile point for a spear. Based on the stone's base shape, the expert believes its manufacture belongs to the late Early Archaic period. The second object found inside the alligator is a teardrop-shaped smooth stone, known as a plummet.

Biological Significance of the Discovery

Thousands of similar items have been uncovered across North America. Alligators intentionally consume stones for several reasons:

  • to aid digestion;
  • to obtain essential minerals;
  • to clear intestinal parasites.

These stones also serve as ballast, helping the reptiles maintain buoyancy while hunting in deep river waters. This find is significant not only for its historical value but also for what it reveals about alligator behavior.
